So what is an alkaline diet?

The alkaline diet is mostly vegetarian. It includes fresh vegetables, some fresh fruits, and alkaline-promoting foods including soy products, some nuts, grains, and legumes. It is pretty much vegetarian. The alkaline diet discourages eating acid-promoting foods such as meat, poultry, dairy products, processed foods, white sugar, white flour and caffeine.

The whole point of eating this way in the alkaline diet is to balance out our body’s PH level. Our PH level is the measure of exactly how acidic or how alkaline we are. A pH of 0 is totally acidic and a pH of 14 is completely alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral. Human beings have more than one pH level. For instance, our stomach has a pH ranging from 1.35-3.5 which is acidic. This is to help with digestion. However our blood must always be slightly alkaline with a pH of 7.35 to 7.45.

It may or may not ease lower back pain too. All of this, however, has not been proven scientifically of the alkaline diet. There is also no evidence backing up the idea that a vegetarian diet or alkaline diet can prevent cancer. It may slow the rate of colon cancer but usually those who are eating healthy have healthy lifestyles and it could be contributed to the mixture of both.

Because there is little to no evidence backing up that a diet such as the alkaline diet can significantly change our blood pH if you have a highly irregular blood pH it may be a sign of a larger problem such as kidney failure. This is not a dietary issue and medical help should be sought out.
