Holistic Health: Green Tea Benefits

The benefits of green tea are numerous. In fact, you could almost go so far as to say green tea is almost a miracle plant. It is really hard not to get super excited about green tea with all its health benefits from fighting cancer and heart disease to lowering cholesterol and burning fat.

So what it is about green tea that makes it so beneficial?

Well, green tea’s antioxidants, which are called catechins, look around your body for free radicals that can damage your DNA and contribute to cancer, blood clots, and atherosclerosis. Berries, grapes, red wine and dark chocolate also have these antioxidants. But green tea has one up on them. Because green tea is minimally processed its unique catechins are more concentrated. One of the most important catechins in green tea is epigallocatechin-3-gallate, also known as, ECCG.

Green tea benefits in the fight against cancer

The ECCG in green tea helps to regulate cells and stops cancer growth by killing cells that are growing inappropriately. There have been a few studies that say if you drink two cups of green tea a day it can stop the growth of cancer. Studies in China have shown that the more people drank green tea the less the risk of developing stomach cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer and colorectal cancer they had.

Green tea benefits and your heart

Green tea’s antioxidants dilate the blood vessels in your body so they improve the flexibility of blood vessels. This makes blood vessels less prone to clogging. Blueberries and pomegranates also do the same thing. Studies involving Japanese men and women showed that four cups of green tea a day could be related to the reduction of coronary heart disease. Another study of men and women found that the more green tea they consumed the better the heart’s blood vessels were, especially in the women.

Green tea benefits and your weight

Green tea has proven itself to be helpful in fighting obesity and bad cholesterol. In one study those who drank caffeinated green tea lost more weight but even those who drank decaffeinated green tea had a decrease in their waistlines. In another study those who were given the highest amounts of green tea lost fat and weight and had lower blood pressure as well as lower bad cholesterol.

All the other green tea benefits

Green tea can also help regulate glucose levels slowing the rise of blood sugar after eating and this can prevent high insulin spikes and the fat storage that occurs due to it.

Green tea is also said to delay the deterioration caused by Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Studies on mice found that green tea protected brain cells from dying and helped heal damaged brain cells.

Green tea can also help with wrinkles and signs of aging. This is because of the anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties in green tea. This has been shown in animal and human studies that green tea can reduce sun damage.

There are so many benefits to drinking green tea but the reality is one cup of green tea today is not going to erase your wrinkles, make you skinny, and cure cancer. The question of how many cups to drink a day is still unanswered but the green tea benefits of two cups a day to five cups a day over a long period of time will definitely show themselves in your body.
