Holistic Health: Green Tea Benefits

The benefits of green tea are numerous. In fact, you could almost go so far as to say green tea is almost a miracle plant. It is really hard not to get super excited about green tea with all its health benefits from fighting cancer and heart disease to lowering cholesterol and burning fat.

So what it is about green tea that makes it so beneficial?

Well, green tea’s antioxidants, which are called catechins, look around your body for free radicals that can damage your DNA and contribute to cancer, blood clots, and atherosclerosis. Berries, grapes, red wine and dark chocolate also have these antioxidants. But green tea has one up on them. Because green tea is minimally processed its unique catechins are more concentrated. One of the most important catechins in green tea is epigallocatechin-3-gallate, also known as, ECCG.

Green tea benefits in the fight against cancer

The ECCG in green tea helps to regulate cells and stops cancer growth by killing cells that are growing inappropriately. There have been a few studies that say if you drink two cups of green tea a day it can stop the growth of cancer. Studies in China have shown that the more people drank green tea the less the risk of developing stomach cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer and colorectal cancer they had.

Green tea benefits and your heart

Green tea’s antioxidants dilate the blood vessels in your body so they improve the flexibility of blood vessels. This makes blood vessels less prone to clogging. Blueberries and pomegranates also do the same thing. Studies involving Japanese men and women showed that four cups of green tea a day could be related to the reduction of coronary heart disease. Another study of men and women found that the more green tea they consumed the better the heart’s blood vessels were, especially in the women.

Green tea benefits and your weight

Green tea has proven itself to be helpful in fighting obesity and bad cholesterol. In one study those who drank caffeinated green tea lost more weight but even those who drank decaffeinated green tea had a decrease in their waistlines. In another study those who were given the highest amounts of green tea lost fat and weight and had lower blood pressure as well as lower bad cholesterol.

All the other green tea benefits

Green tea can also help regulate glucose levels slowing the rise of blood sugar after eating and this can prevent high insulin spikes and the fat storage that occurs due to it.

Green tea is also said to delay the deterioration caused by Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Studies on mice found that green tea protected brain cells from dying and helped heal damaged brain cells.

Green tea can also help with wrinkles and signs of aging. This is because of the anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties in green tea. This has been shown in animal and human studies that green tea can reduce sun damage.

There are so many benefits to drinking green tea but the reality is one cup of green tea today is not going to erase your wrinkles, make you skinny, and cure cancer. The question of how many cups to drink a day is still unanswered but the green tea benefits of two cups a day to five cups a day over a long period of time will definitely show themselves in your body.

Detox Diets

What are detox diets?

Detox diets are extreme and quick weight loss diets that claim to flush the body of toxins and chemicals. Detox diets have all kinds of promises too depending on what kind of diet they are. Most detox diets promise purifying results from poisonous toxins. Detox diets are based on the concept that our bodies need help getting rid of unwanted contaminants and toxins in processed foods and the environment. Once your body is free of toxins it can function better and help your metabolism soar so you can shed extra pounds.

There are tons and tons of different detox diets but most follow the pattern of low calorie fasting with the additional meals that consist of fruits and vegetables, water, and supplements. Some detox diets consist of herbs, pills, powders, enemas, and other forms of intestinal and colon cleanses. Detox diet methods change and frequently include products that are exclusive to the author of the diets web site.

Detox diets have gotten the reputation as being the perfect way to remove harmful toxins from the body and to lose weight. Right now detox diets are hotter than ever and more popular than they have ever been before. The Hollywood stars do it before they hit the red carpet, Dr.Oz has raved about his own formula, and multiple spa retreats feature them.

Regardless of the popularity of detox diets, nutritionists say they aren’t really necessary and there is no scientific evidence to back them up.

Do detox diets actually work?

You may have seen Beyoncé drop 20 pounds on the Lemonade diet, which included maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper. If you watched her lose the weight you also know that soon after she gained the weight back and warned dieters against the regimen.

Weight loss occurs due to detox diets because of the low calorie plan. When you dramatically reduce the amount of calories you take in you will lose weight but a lot of the times it can cause health problems such as muscle loss. When you start a detox diet that is low in calories your body also goes into conservation mode which means you are burning calories more slowly.

There is no scientific evidence to stand up for detox diets

There is little to no scientific evidence that says that detox diets are necessary or even effective. Your body, without going on detox diets, is able to get rid of toxins and contaminants. There is no credible science to back up detox diets actually work or are needed. Most claims for detox diets tend to be testimonials.

Healthier detox diets

If you want to be on a healthy detox diet your best bet is to eat cleanly. Eating cleanly as a form of detox dieting is eating less processed foods that are closer to earth and don’t have artificial ingredients. Healthy detox diets will suggest lots of water, fruits, vegetables, fiber, lean protein, low-fat dairy and whole grains while also allowing 1,400-1,600 calories per day.

If you want detox diets that will work stick to these natural detox diet foods:

  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Lemons
  • Watercress
  • Green tea
  • Broccoli sprouts
  • Sesame seeds
  • Cabbage
  • Psyllium
  • Fruits

Instead of a detox diet fast which most popular detox diets are, try a healthy detox diet plan that you can stick with for a long time.
