Not everyone can afford to buy organic only. However, with some foods it is more important than others because the non-organic versions tend to have higher levels of pesticides, hormones, and additives. Here are the most important foods to buy organic.

1.) Meat – Raising animals with conventional methods means using hormones to speed up growth, antibiotics to resist disease on crowded feed lots, and both pesticides and chemical fertilizers to grow the grain fed to the animals. Also, non-organic meat usually contains color-fixer chemicals, such as Sodium Nitrate, to preserve meats and also to keep the red color of the meat. Organic meat comes from an animal that ate only organic food, roamed outdoors from time to time and was left free of antibiotics. Some people feel overuse of ­antibiotics can lead to the development of drug-resistant strains of bacteria in animals and people. Also, organically raised animals are fed a diet free of meat by –products. This is important because feeding animals meat by-products can spread diseases like Mad Cow.

2.) Milk and Dairy Products –  Nonorganic milk can contain some pesticides. It also contains antibiotics and growth hormones. Organic milk is free of pesticides, antibiotics, and growth hormones. Recent studies have also found that levels of antioxidants in milk produced by organically-raised cattle were 50 to 80 percent higher than in normal milk.

3.) Fruits and Vegetables with a Peel or Skin – Non-organic fruits and vegetables are allowed to be sprayed with synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, insecticides and herbicides. The U.S. Department of Agriculture found that even after washing, some fruits and vegetables consistently carry much higher levels of pesticide residue than others. Every year, the Environmental Working Group analyzes Department of Agriculture data about pesticide residue and ranks foods based on how much or little pesticide residue they have. They then release a list of the fruits and vegetables with the highest levels of pesticides. The list is known as the “Dirty Dozen.” The Environmental Working Group estimates that individuals can reduce their exposure by 80% if they switch to organic when buying these 12 foods:

Products that are completely organic — such as fruits, vegetables, eggs or other single-ingredient foods — are labeled 100 percent organic and can carry the USDA seal.

Foods that have more than one ingredient, such as breakfast cereal, can use the USDA organic seal plus the following wording, depending on the number of organic ingredients:

  • 100 percent organic. To use this phrase, products must be either completely organic or made of all organic ingredients.
  • Organic. Products must be at least 95 percent organic to use this term.

1/2 Pomegranate Seeds

1/2 Cup Blackberries

1 Cup Cherries (pitted)

5ml Glutamine Powder

Pinch Himalayan Crystal Salt

750ml – 1 liter Filtered Alkaline Water (or Purified water + 1 Tsp. Fresh Lemon Juice)


1. Muddle blackberries, cherries and pomegranate in a small bowl and add to a large 1 liter glass or Mason jar, add remaining ingredients and stir

2. Refrigerate for 4-6 hours

1/4 Cucumber (sliced)

Here are the steps to taking a detox bath:

1. Add 2 cups Epsom salt to a standard tub full of water. If your tub is bigger, add more salt.

2. Ideally, you want the water as hot as you can stand it. We are looking to create a nice sweat.

3. If your bath water is not filtered, add 1 cup of baking soda as this helps neutralize the chemicals, primarily chlorine, as well as increases mineral absorption.

4. Immerse yourself in the water, all the way up to your neck. You want as much of your body underwater as you can. Close your eyes do some breathing exercises and soak for at least 20 minutes.

5. Once you are done soaking, rise out of the tub very slowly and cautiously. You may feel a little dizzy and light-headed; this will go away as you shower off quickly in cool water.

6. It is important not to use harsh soaps or shampoos as your pores are open and will just absorb the chemicals found in those products.

  • 1 Tbsp steel cut oats (optional – to infuse)
  • 1 sprig of rosemary (optional – to infuse)
  • 1 c. distilled water
  • 1 Tsp. citric acid (to prevent bacterial growth in your body wash)
  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil (can swap out with olive, grapeseed, almond, jojoba, apricot kernel or any other oil)
  • 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 1-1/2 c. liquid castile soap (I used Dr. Bronner’s)
  • 1 tsp. guar gum (you can find it in most markets that carry natural foods with the Bob’s Red Mill grains)
  • 30 drops essential oils (your preference – I used a blend of lavender, chamomile, and lemongrass)

1. Boil water in a kettle and once boiling pour over the oats and rosemary (or whatever you decide to infuse). Cover and let sit for an hour, then strain to remove oats and rosemary bits from your infusion.

2. In a bowl whisk your oil, honey, infusion, and citric acid together.

3. Sprinkle in the guar gum, whisking to combine, and then immediately afterward whisk in the castile soap (if you wait too long the guar gum will thicken and you’ll have clumps) until blended and smooth.

4. Drop in your essential oils and fold in with a spoon or spatula. Store the mixture in a bottle that you have sterilized (opaque is best) out of direct sunlight and shake before each use.

1.) Holistic Holiday Eggnog Recipe


2 large eggs

2/3 cup canned coconut milk

1/3 cup water

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/8 tsp. nutmeg

2 tbsp. raw honey


1. On the stovetop, melt the raw honey just until melted.

2. In a large bowl add eggs.

3. With an electric mixer beat eggs on medium high until well blended.

4. Add coconut milk, water and melted raw honey and beat on medium high for several minutes until mixture thickens slightly.

5. Stir in the vanilla and ground nutmeg.

6. Chill for several hours.

7. Serve with a cinnamon stick and some ground nutmeg on top.

8. If you want this to be an alcoholic eggnog, add a little brandy, rum or bourbon


2.) Holistic Recipes for Healthy Living: Gluten-free Chocolate Chip Cookies


3 cups blanched almond flour

1/4 cup grass fed butter

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup organic cane sugar

1/4 cup raw honey

2 eggs

2 tsp. vanilla extract

1 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. unrefined sea salt

1/2 – 1 cup chocolate chips (I use Enjoy Life semi-sweet chocolate mini chips which are dairy, nut and soy free.)

Preheat oven to 375 F. With a Kitchen Aid or electric mixer blend together butter, coconut oil, organic cane sugar, raw honey, eggs and vanilla extract. Blend until well combined (about 2 minutes). In a separate bowl combine almond flour, baking soda and unrefined sea salt. Mix well. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and blend until well combined. Stir in chocolate chips. Place a rounded spoonful (about 1 inch) onto a parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.


3.) Holistic Recipes for Healthy Living: Butter Cookies


3 egg yolks

1/2 cup Stevia Blend (Can use other sweetener of choice)

2 tsp. vanilla extract

4 cups blanched almond flour

2 sticks (or 1 cup) grass fed butter, softened

2 tbsp. coconut flour


Preheat oven to 400 F. Combine butter, egg yolks, sweetener, and vanilla with an electric mixer or kitchen aid. Add almond flour and coconut flour and blend with mixer until well combined. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Press down slightly with a fork making a criss cross design on the cookie. Bake for 8-10 minutes until slightly brown. Sprinkle with homemade red sprinkles (see recipe).


4. Holistic Recipes for Healthy Living: Rum Balls


1 cup (about 8 pieces) of shortbread (see recipe) cut up into pieces.

1 cup finely ground pecans, or pecan meal

2 tbsp. + 2 tsp. rum

2 tbsp. + 2 tsp. raw honey

Unsweetened coconut flakes (optional)


Mix all ingredients (except coconut flakes) together. Roll into 1 inch balls. Roll balls into coconut flakes if desired.


5. Holistic Recipes for Healthy Living: Shortbread


3 cups blanched almond flour

2 sticks (or 1 cup) grass fed butter

1/2 cup organic cane sugar


Preheat oven to 300 F. Combine almond flour, butter and sugar together (I used my kitchen Aid Mixer). Press evenly into an ungreased 8×8 pan. Gently prick with a fork. Bake for 1 hour. Remove from oven and cut shortbread in 20 pieces. Turn oven off and return the shortbread back to the oven while leaving your oven door slightly opened (I used a metal spoon to create a 1-2 inch opening). Leave shortbread in oven for 1 hour. This is an important step to allow the shortbread to crisp up. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before removing from pan.

Some other terms associated with holistic medicine are alternative medicine, complementary medicine and natural healing. Most of these are referring to techniques they use such as conventional medicine along with non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical practices when needed.

The equipment was expensive, and drugs were the new go-to treatment for pain and disease. However, the downfalls of drug therapy were soon evident. Often drug therapy had undesirable side effects.

The dangers of drug therapy for pain management are just recently becoming evident. While the danger of narcotic pain medication has always been noted, diversion, abuse and addiction are at an all-time high. Twenty-five years ago, doctors did not prescribe opioid pain medication for non-malignant chronic pain out of fear of addiction. These medications were reserved for those suffering from cancer or other terminal diseases. In the 90’s, a shift occurred in the medical community and the focus turned to improving patient quality of life. Prescription drug manufacturers spent millions on marketing and developing new drugs to treat pain. With these prescription drugs flooding the market, narcotic painkiller use and abuse began to increase exponentially.

With the new, stronger, and more easily abused narcotic painkillers available, people began to get hooked at an unprecedented rate. The number of narcotic painkiller addicted babies has tripled in the last three years, and in some states, death from prescription drug overdose is now more common than car crash fatalities.

People began to look outside drug therapy for treatment of pain. Holistic medicine was becoming more popular because of the dangers of drug therapy. With the surge of interest in holistic medicine, the practice of hydrotherapy for holistic health was revived and modernized.

Hydrotherapy treatments include saunas, steam baths, foot baths, sitz baths, and the application of cold and hot water compresses. Proponents for hydrotherapy for holistic health claim that it stimulates endorphins, the body’s natural “feel good” chemicals. Chakras are entry gates of the aura. Within the physical body of each individual resides a body double, a spiritual body that contains the chakras per say. The word chakra is Sanscrit and translates into the word wheel or disc. Chakras look like wheels or discs at different points of the body. They are centers of activity that receives, assimilates and expresses life force energy. They are responsible for the person’s physical, mental and spiritual functions. Therefore we can clearly see how chakra system and holistic health are closely intertwined. Chakras absorb and transmit energies to and from the universe, nature, celestial entities, from people and even from things. The most significant chakras are located along the central line of the body from the base of the spine to the top of the head. They are located in the ethereal body and they express the embodiment of spiritual energy on the physical plane. Chakra system and holistic health work very well together because of this strong focus not only on the physical and mental but also the spiritual.

Chakras are constantly rotating and vibrating and different activities influence them and therefore influence are body shape, thoughts, behavior, and physical ailments. When one or more chakra is blocked and the energy does not flow harmoniously between them or out of them, it will result in an imbalance that is manifested in all areas of life. Each chakra is expressed on the physical body in one of the endocrine glands that regulate physical and emotional processes in the body. You can assess your chakra system by using a pendulum over your palm. “Holistic” is a word that has infiltrated popular conscience in recent years. People talk about holistic healing, holistic foods, and holistic therapy. But what does holistic mean? Holistic is derived from the Greek word “holos” meaning whole, all, or total. It is the idea that a natural system, like the human body, should be treated as a whole, instead of a collection of separate parts.

Holistic health is the practice of treating the human body as a whole. It is the idea that all parts of a person- physical, mental, emotional and spiritual- must be healthy and in balance in order for a person to recover from an ailment. Therefore, those who practice holistic healthcare not only address the physical symptoms of an illness, they also address the other aspects of the person.

Holistic health care has its roots in ancient medicine. For 6000 years, medical practitioners believed that physical ailments had roots in emotional and spiritual illness. In the seventeenth century, Rene Descartes presented his ideas of two substances, matter – material and immaterial. He believed that the body was material matter and followed the laws of physics and the soul was immaterial matter and did not follow physical laws. He also believed that there was a barrier between body and soul that could not be breached. This idea formed the basis of modern medicine. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that ideas began to change again and it was recognized that psychological and spiritual issues could affect physical health.

So what does holistic mean in terms of drug treatment? Holistic drug treatment treats the whole body. Addiction is a three-fold disease. It is a spiritual malady, a physical allergy, and a mental obsession. Holistic drug treatment treats the whole person-spiritual, physical, and mental. Holistic drug treatment employs practices to treat all three facets of the disease.

Treating the physical aspect of addiction is very important, obviously. This is the quantifiable aspect of addiction. You can observe a person’s physical symptoms when they are withdrawing from a substance. You can give them medications to relieve the discomfort. However, after 10 days, a person’s body is no longer dependent on the substance. If this were the only aspect of drug addiction, then anyone who has been through detox could stay sober forever. Rarely is this the case. Only when a person’s body and mind are free from drug addiction can you begin to treat the mental and spiritual portions of the disease.

The psychological aspect of the disease is addressed in treatment. You attend therapy to deal with the causes of the alcohol or drug addiction. This alone is not sufficient to lift the mental obsession, however. In order to truly be free of the mental obsession with drugs and alcohol, you must treat the spiritual malady. And this is the basis of holistic drug treatment-the idea that everything is connected. Through twelve steps and a relationship with a higher power, you will truly be able to conquer all aspects of the disease of addiction.
